Question
My patient presented requesting a mammogram as her mother had breast cancer. There was no other family history of breast cancer and her mother was in her 60s. The patient was 32 years old. On reviewing the MBS I was uncertain if there was a rebate for a screening mammogram considering she had no symptoms, just concerns?
Answer
The MBS descriptor for screening mammogram includes family history however in this patients case a mammogram may not be the best modality due to her age. Consideration for ultrasound and discussion with the radiologist post ultrasound about the necessity of the mammogram would be indicated in this case.
