Dr Jonathan Griffiths explains the value of General Practice in TEDxNantwich. An inspirational and passionate medical practitioners, educator and speaker.
It is a common theme that as GPs we hear every day. “Just a GP” – I heard it from medical school, through training and now even as a practice owner. It is a long shadow that is cast and in captures all those who are passionate about generalists in medicine. I particularly like the example used of other areas that have “generalists” that are highly regarded and accepted. I thought of a few more in the health area that have the choice to sub-specialise but in normal everyday practice it is the well rounded generalist that can support the patients:
- Physiotherapists
- Dentists
- Psychologists
- Pharmacists
- Occupational Therapists
- Speech Therapists
Like General Practitioners these health professionals all have the opportunity to pick a particular area of interest, but in no way does it dilute or remove their broad base knowledge if they continue to practice broad- generalist health practice.
Recognising the broad skill set, knowledge and range of areas a generalist come cover should be more highly regarded. It is however up to the medical profession to educate patients about the value of General Practice.
